Dr. Hatem Zaki, Ph.D, P.Eng., PMP is a Professional Electrical Engineer and a Project Management Profesional. His field of specialization is Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Systems where he brings various, continuous, extensive and solid experiences in industries such as Hydro Utilities, Engineering Consulting and Oil and Gas. Hatem joined the Distribution Planning Department of BC Hydro, British Columbia, Canada as an Area Capacity Planner for Vancouver and Burnaby in February 2008. His duties include preparing long and short term Engineering area studies and master plans including load forecasts and capital program preparation. His duties also include identifying and managing distribution system operational and capital implementation risks. Before Distribution planning, Hatem worked as a Field Services Engineer in the Distribution Engineering department of BC Hydro for Maple Ridge, Fraser Valley East, Coquitlam, Burnaby and Vancouver, where he looked after Project Management and engineering activities for delivering capital projects and programs. Prior to BC Hydro Hatem worked as the Distribution Engineering Supervisor for Waterloo North Hydro Inc. in Ontario, Canada for more than three years. His work involved leading five professional technicians and technologists for delivering design, project management and capital program preparation and delivery for the Electric system. His work also included residential and commercial customer connections in the Northern Waterloo region. Hatem started his career in 1992 in Cairo, Egypt, in which he worked for international consulting firms performing design, studies, planning and Project Management for transmission and distribution systems including industrial power quality work for various countries in the Middle East. Hatem moved to Ontario, Canada in November 2000 after traveling to more than six countries, for work reasons, acquiring a wide variety of experiences in Electric Power Systems’ analysis, design, planning and project management. In addition to his Masters (M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering, Hatem holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Power Engineering, a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Engineering Management and is designated as a Project Management Professional (PMP). He is also a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia, Ontario and the state of Nevada. He is also an International Professional Engineer (IntPE) registered in the Engineers Canada mobility register. Hatem has a strong resume and his achievements include managing complex projects for a total capital of more than $200M, participating in process improvements, impact assessments, problem solving and plan developments. Hatem has multiple publications in the distribution systems planning and operations' industry. As a Project Manager and an Engineer Dr. Zaki has a recognized reputation in teaching, mentoring, coaching, and guiding professionals in their career. Hatem is also a registered mentor and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEG BC), a registered member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), and a member of the Project Management Institute – Canadian West Coast Chapter (PMI-CWCC). Hatem is also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1998 and paricipated as a sub-committee member at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in Egypt. On the internet, Hatem is an active member of several Project management and Engineering discussion forums. Outside of work Hatem enjoys reading, swimming and soccer games. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and his two kids.
