Dr. Thierry Desot is a senior lecturer in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Knowledge Centre Creating 010. He conducts applied research at the intersection of AI and healthcare, with a focus on responsible AI. His work concentrates on detecting and mitigating bias in large language models, as well as exploring multimodal AI for healthcare applications. Examples include gender, religious, or political biases that may affect diagnostics and care for minority groups. At the start of his tenure, he is investigating these forms of bias and exploring how language models and multimodal approaches can support decision-making in complex healthcare situations, such as early disease detection—with NLP playing a key role. He obtained his PhD at Université Grenoble Alpes (2017–2020) on spoken language understanding in smart homes for older adults, using deep learning. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University (2021–2023), focusing on information extraction and personalized news recommendation with large language models.
